Don Norman studies how real people interact with design, exploring the gulf between what a designer intends and what a regular person actually wants.
Donald Arthur Norman,Ā is an American researcher, professor, and author, an anthropologist of modern life, studying the way we humans interact with our designed world.
Norman began hisĀ career as an academic, working in psychology and then cognitive science at UCSD. In the mid-'90s, he joined Apple and ended up in their Advanced Technology Group, and later worked for HP, before returning to university life. He's now the co-director ofĀ an innovative combined MBA and MEM program (calledĀ MMM)Ā at Northwestern University.
He is also the director of The Design Lab atĀ the University of California, San Diego, co-founder of the usability consultancyĀ Nielsen Norman Group, a member of the National Academy of Engineering, IDEO fellow, and former Vice President of Apple.
Though he has aĀ slightĀ reputation as a grumpy critic, his work is generous and insightful -- he wants nothing less than to close the gap between products and their users.Ā If you've ever fought with an automatic faucet in an airport bathroom or wondered which button to press in the anonymous row on top of your printer, it's good to know that Norman is in your corner.
He is widely regarded for his expertise in the fields of design,Ā usability engineering, and cognitive science, and he is the author of a raft ofĀ booksĀ on design and the way we humans interact with it, including the classic Design of Everyday Things, and Living with Complexity, Emotional Design: Why We Love (or Hate) Everyday Things, andĀ The Design of Future Things, among many others.
His next book, says hisĀ website, will be aboutĀ sociable design.
Traditional design education is too narrow. Don Norman advocates a broader perspective for design and designers.
Today, Norman's emphasis is on helping technology companies structure their product lines and businesses, concentrating on design thinking to help drive both incremental and radical innovation.
